EC tightens rules for public display of leader`s posters

Tightening regulations concerning public display of election canvass material, the Election Commission issued specific directives to remove all pictures and calendars of leaders including the PM and Chief Ministers.

Lucknow March 30: Tightening regulations concerning
public display of election canvass material, the Election
Commission has issued specific directives to remove all
pictures and calendars of leaders including the Prime Minister
and Chief Ministers.

According to the directives issued by the EC, posters or
calendars displaying pictures of political office bearers
would have to be removed from public and government
buildings, Additional Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar
Pradesh, Amrit Abhijat told media persons here today, citing
that this was the first time such directives were issued.

Only the pictures of father of the nation, Mahatma
Gandhi, incumbent President Pratibha Patil and incumbent
governors of the states have been exempted, Abhijat said.

Meanwhile, another important directive by the
commission states that the expenditure of bullet proof
vehicles who had been provided with them for non-government
purposes would have to be borne by them.

"If such a person also happens to be a member of a
political party the expenditure would have to be incurred by
that particular party," the official said.

EC to be in touch with all polling stations

Election Commission has said it
would remain in touch with all the polling stations in Uttar
Pradesh to get a first hand account of any problem during the
poll process.

Chief Electoral Officer (UP), Anuj Kumar Bishnoi today
told reporters here that this time the Election Commission and
respective district magistrates would be in direct touch with
all polling stations in the state.

For this, phone numbers of people residing close to
these stations would be available to them so that in case of
any problem, officials can assess the situation.

Bishnoi said that all district magistrates will give
in writing that the poll related work has been completed in
their area before the elections.
