New Delhi: India's leading car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki on Tuesday hiked the prices of its vehicles by up to Rs 31,000 across all models following the government's decision to put on halt the excise duty cut to the auto sector.

In December, the government decided not to extend the reduced excise duty rates provided to the auto sector beyond Dec 31, a move which has caused many car companies in India to hike prices.

Yesterday, Honda Cars India became the first company to hike the prices of their vehicles by up to Rs 60,000.

Today, General Motors India hiked the prices of their vehicles by upto Rs 61,000.

Hyundai Motor India also increased thier vehicle prices by up to Rs 1.27 lakh today.

"Whatever excise duty hike has happened from the government`s side we are passing that on to customers," R.S. Kalsi, executive director at Maruti, was quoted as saying.

No details about the prices of each model was available at the time of filing of this story.
