New Delhi: Low-cost Canadian mobile device maker Datawind on Tuesday launched Android-based smartphones with free basic internet services for one year.
The two phones 2G4 and 3G4 are priced at Rs 1,999 and Rs 2,999 respectively
Low-cost mobile device maker Datawind has earmarked about Rs 150 crore to launch these smartphones.
"We have raised 30 million Canadian dollar (about Rs 150 crore) through our public offer and all that is earmarked for this project," Datawind Founder and CEO Suneet Singh Tuli had said earlier.
Industry trends show that an estimated 76 percent of Indian mobile device buyers choose handsets priced below Rs 4,000 and 60 percent buy phones priced below Rs 2,000, he had said.
"Many of these customers are not subscribers of Internet services. We want to tap the first time Internet users category and grow it gradually," Tuli had said.
DataWind in the past six months has tied up with UniverCell in the south, Spice Retail in the North and West and has established its own distribution network in the east.
