New Delhi: Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi might soon manufacture its handsets in India, if media reports are to be believed.

As per reports online, Inventec, the Taiwanese ODM is mulling setting up of a production facility in Chennai. The company could start production by the third quarter of 2015, reports said.

The company was founded in April 2010 by Lei and his friends in Zhongguancun, Beijing’s technology hub, dubbed as China’s Silicon Valley.

Xiaomi, just three years after selling its first handset, a USD 1.1 billion round of fund-raising announced in December valued the privately held company at USD 45 billion, making it the world's most valuable tech start-up.

According to IDC, the key to Xiaomi’s success was the launch of its Mi4 smartphone in August, which was positioned as a high—end alternative to the status quo.

Xiaomi has had mixed success in India. Sales of its handsets were suspended there after telecom-equipment maker Ericsson filed a complaint alleging infringement of intellectual property rights.
