Cabinet approves Shah Commission's report on illegal mining

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved Justice M B Shah Commission's report on mining which will soon be tabled in Parliament.

As per Zee Media sources, the Cabinet has also accepted Shah Commission's action taking report on iron ore mining.

Justice M B Shah Commission was appointed by the UPA government to probe illegal mining in Odisha, Jharkhand and Goa.

In October 2013, Justice Shah had submitted its report to the Mines Ministry.

The Commission had also recommended a total ban on iron ore and manganese ore exports. The illegal mining scam in Goa was pegged at Rs 35,000 crore. The Commission, set up to look into irregularities in the mining space between 2008 and 2011 said minerals worth about Rs 60,000 crore were illegally mined in Odisha during the aforesaid period.

The commission has undertaken a thorough probe into the bank transactions of exporters, traders and mining lease owners to track down the exact financial transaction.

The Shah Commission had also been empowered to recommend remedial measures to prevent illegal mining, trade and export done illegally or without lawful authority.
