New Delhi: From luxurious penthouse apartments to a single-room in Tihar jail is something impossible for business honchos like Subrata Roy to imagine. But he did faced the bitter truth when he was arrested over a year ago for failure to refund Rs 20,000 crore to investors.
But again, money can sure buy one all the possible luxuries and that is exactly what the Sahara Group chief seem to have done in Tihar jail.
As per report in The Times of India, Subrata Roy paid a whopping Rs 1.23 crore to enjoy special facilities in Tihar jail for a year. This amount is enough to take care of 200 inmates for a year, the report said.
The Sahara Chief has, however, already been moved to ordinary cell in November.
"Tihar Jail authorities have received Rs 1,23,70,000 from Sahara Group for using the conference room. The payment includes charges for security, electricity, maintenance, rent and other facilities like food and water. The group is yet to submit Rs 7.5 lakh rupees more," TOI reported quoting sources.
Roy was arrested and sent to Tihar Jail on March 4, 2014, for failing to refund over Rs 20,000 crore with interest to investors.
The Sahara chief was also asked by the Supreme Court of India to pay Rs 10,000 crore bail with Rs 5,000 crore in cash and the remaining as bank guarantee. However, the company has been unable to pay the said amount.
During his stay in Tihar, Roy has had the priviledge to use the conference room to negotiate the sale of his luxury hotels in New York and London to raise the bail money.
