Tata-Unitech land deal: CBI begins preliminary investigation, may question Ratan Tata

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has started preliminary investigation based on the recommendation of Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) on Tata-Unitech deal and the agency would be soon examining some of the senior officials of the two companies in this regard, as per Zee Media sources.

A Preliminary Enquiry (PE) was registered by CBI this week to probe an alleged Rs 1,700 crore land deal between Tata Realty and Unitech in 2007.

The SFIO has alleged that the realty deal between Tatas and Unitech in 2007 could have been been meant for funding Unitech's telecom licence issued in January 2008.

CBI will examine four top management officials of Tata group companies, including the then Tata Sons chief Ratan Tata in this matter, Zee Media sources have said.

Zee Media has also access to the SFIO report which mentions the name of Ratan Tata, Director of Tata Realty FN Subedar and PD Karkaria, CFO Kishore Selatore and the Company Secretary MV Balajee. The report has also mentioned the names of lobbyist Nira Niira Radia, Unitech chairman Ramesh Chandra, and managing directors Sanjay Chandra and Ajay Chandra.
