New Delhi: After rise in the rates of onions, now its the turn of tomatoes whose retail price has soared to Rs 50 per kg in the National Capital Region. Even though the rates of onions and potatoes had been increasing for the past several weeks, tomatoe prices were relatively selling at constantly lower prices.
The increase in the price can be blamed due to scanty rainfall across North India. Earlier during the month, tomatoes are were available at Rs 20-30 per kilogram in the retail market while it was available for Rs 10-15 per kilogram in the wholesale market in the national capital.
Not just the local retailer, the Safal and Mother Dairy outlets are reportedly selling tomatoes at Rs 40- 45 per kg, which is double the price at which it was being sold a fortnight ago.
According to Met department, low pressure in Bay of Bengal is the reason of bad monsoons and if it continues, the prices of essential commodities will go up.
Traders in Azadpur wholesale market have said that there has been a drop in the supplies of tomatoes into the city. The present supplies of vegetables is being procured from Bengaluru and Maharashtra, while supplies from the nearby areas in Haryana has fallen for past few weeks.
