Core sector growth rises to 6.3% in October

New Delhi: Growth of eight core industries rose to 6.3 percent in October on the back of a strong production of coal, crude oil and petroleum products putting the cumulative growth during April-October, 2014-15 at 4.3 percent.

The eight core sectors -- coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity -- grew by just 0.1 percent in October last year.

In September, the eight core sector growth plunged to eight-month low of 1.9 percent as output in crude oil, natural gas and fertiliser declined.

In October, coal production grew by a huge 16.2 percent while crude oil production increased by 1.0 percent and petroleum refinery production grew by 4.2 percent, according to a government release.

Electricity and steel production grew by 13.2 percent and 2.3 percent respectively.

On the other hand, production of natural gas declined by 4.2 percent, fertiliser by 7.0 percent and cement by 1.0 perecnt, the release stated.

The eight core sectors have a combined weight of about 38 percent in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).
