DIPP may announce states' ranking on ease of doing biz this week

The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) is expected to release the ranking of states on 'ease of doing business' this week.

New Delhi: The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) is expected to release the ranking of states on 'ease of doing business' this week.

World Bank is helping the DIPP in releasing this report, an official said.

The main objective of this exercise is to promote competitiveness among states to attract investments.

"Although central government departments are taking steps to improve India's ranking in ease of doing, over 70 percent work happens in the states. So, they have to take measures in this direction," the official said, adding that ranking will be based on 98 parameters.

The department had circulated a set of 285 questions to all states in this regard. The state governments have responded to those questions.

India is currently ranked 142nd among 189 nations in the World Bank's 'Ease of Doing Business 2015' study. With the exception of two parameters (getting credit and protecting minority investors), India does not feature in top 100 in the remaining parameters.

All these efforts are aimed at bringing India into the top 50 in terms of ease of doing business in the next three years.

Improved ranking will help in attracting both domestic and foreign investments.

"Since the World Bank is expert in this exercise, the DIPP has sought their help. It has done several meetings and workshops on this," the official added.

During April-June period of this fiscal, FDI in the country grew by 31 percent to USD 9.50 billion, as compared to USD 7.23 billion in the same period last year.
