The government will import potatoes for the first time to check price rise and improve domestic supplies, Agriculture Secretary said on Thursday.

Hike in potato prices across the country is giving tough time to the government. Potato prices in Delhi is now hovering around Rs 40 per kg.

Meanwhile, government is working on National Food Processing Policy to reduce wastage of perishables and improve the supply situation, Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal said yesterday.

Badal emphasised that the utmost focus should be on reducing the wastage of three main vegetables -- onions, tomatoes and potato as they are driving inflation.
