Hannover: Appealing to global players to participate in India's growth story, a top official today said the country is getting into an advanced stage of manufacturing that is getting converged with digital technology.
Addressing a gathering of leading global players in the field of engineering, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion Secretary Amitabh Kant said the 'Make in India' programme is aimed at creating vast scale jobs.
"The aim of 'Make in India' is essentially to create millions of jobs which can be achieved through growth of the manufacturing sector. India will see several layers of manufacturing.
"We are getting into an advanced stage of manufacturing. As we get into the 4.0 stage, we will see our manufacturing getting converged in digital technology and we see many leading players getting into the highly labour-intensive manufacturing," he said.
He, however, noted that currently the labour intensity is falling and there is a need to focus on the sectors like textiles, leather, gems and jwellery and food processing which are labour intensive.
"We have a population of 1.3 billion which we need to focus on. To address the issue of falling labour intensity, we will have to focus on these sectors as well so that there is job creation. Some states have already advanced in these sectors in a unique way," Kant said.
He said the government is taking several initiatives to enable global players to set up their manufacturing base in the country by opening the economy.
"Our aim is to give opportunity to our youth as well as to global companies," Kant added.
