Delhi
: The government is
likely to come out with a policy in the next two months to make it mandatory for
the state-owned firms to buy at least 20 per cent of their total purchases from
micro and small enterprises (MSEs).

"We expect the policy (on procurement
from MSEs) to be out within in two months time," Secretary in Micro, Small
and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Ministry Dinesh Rai told reporters at the
sidelines of an Assocham function here Wednesday.

He said a Cabinet note on the proposed
policy was ready and would be circulated to different ministries in the next couple
of days.

"We will circulate it (Cabinet note)
to different ministries within in 2-3 days for comments," Rai said.

As per the proposal, all public sector
companies, including the railways and entities under the Defence Ministry,
would have to procure 20 per cent of their total requirements in three years
from the MSEs.

Recently, a Committee of Secretaries was
set up by the government for arriving at a consensus on the formulation of the
procurement policy.

There are 26 million MSMEs in the country,
contributing about 45 per cent to
India
's total manufactured output.

The proposed Budget allocation for the
ministry for the next fiscal is Rs 2,400 crore.
