New Delhi: In a move that is likely to sent up the cost of electric bill of consumers, the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) on Thursday approved the Power Purchase Cost Adjustment charge (PPAC) under which power tariff was hiked by up to 7 percent.

Under the move, power companies on Thursday hiked tariff by upto 7 percent in the national capital.

To be applicable from Saturday, the DERC approved a hike of 7 percent for BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), 4.5 percent for BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and 2.5 percent for Tata Power.

BRPL supplies electricity of south and west Delhi while Tata Power supplies north Delhi.

BYPL supplies to east and central Delhi.

Earlier in July this year, the DERC had hiked power tariff in Delhi by up to 8.2 percent.

“After receiving the power petitions from the distribution companies we examined it thoroughly and have approved the new rates. We need to understand that it is not a quarterly hike as from July 2013 and July 2014 we have approved power purchase adjustment charges only twice,” PD Sudhakar, chairman of DERC is reported to have said.
