BSE Sensex extends early slide, drops over 240 points

The NSE 50-share barometer Nifty also fell 78.90 points, or 1.24 percent, to 6,266.75.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex extended its slide in afternoon trade and settled lower by over 240 points Friday on profit booking.

Capital goods, realty, banking, metal and auto sector stocks were the main sufferer.

The BSE-30 share index resumed lower at 21,289.15 points, and hovered in a range of 21,333.66 to 21,123.99 before closing at 21,133.56, showed a loss of 240.10 points or 1.12 percent.

Sensex had gained over 310 points in the previous four sessions.

The NSE 50-share barometer Nifty also fell 78.90 points, or 1.24 percent, to 6,266.75.

Major losers on BSE were - Tata Steel 4.08 percent, BHEL 2.39 percent, Tata Motors 3.26 percent, Sesa Goa 2.92 percent and L&T 2.63 percent.

Asian stocks extended losses today tracking overnight losses in the US.

US stocks closed sharply lower yesterday as weak economic data from China prompted investors to sell resource stocks and emerging-markets assets and seek safety in bonds, gold, and high-dividend paying sectors.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought net Rs 433.60 crores yesterday, as per the provisional figures issued by stock exchanges.
