BSE Sensex extends losses; plunges over 250 points

The NSE 50-share Nifty also moved down by 78.45 or 1.26 cent to 6,124.35.

Mumbai: The S&P BSE benchmark Sensex extended its earlier losses and was quoted lower by over 250 points in afternoon trade due to fresh selling pressure mainly in Realty, Power, Auto, Metals and Oil & gas stocks.

The Sensex resumed higher at 20,875.31 and firmed up further to 20,922.32 on initial strong buying on the back of higher global cues coupled with persistent foreign capital inflows.

However, it declined afterwards to 20,589.72 before quoting at 20,614, showing a loss of 250.97 points or 1.20 percent from its last close.

The NSE 50-share Nifty also moved down by 78.45 or 1.26 cent to 6,124.35.

Major losers on BSE were Wipro (4.46 percent), Tata Motors (2.78 percent), Bajaj Auto (2.25 percent) Dr Reddy's Lab (1.95 percent) and Tata Steel ( 1.59 percent).

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 794.90 crore yesterday as per provisional data from the stock exchanges.

Asian stock markets were trading mostly higher after disappointing US jobs data firmly pushed expectations for the tapering of Federal Reserve stimulus into next year.

Key benchmark indices in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore and Japan rose by 0.14 percent to one percent while indices in China, South Korea and Taiwan fell by 0.31 percent to 1.23 percent.
