Nifty holds 8,600-level ahead of monsoon session

Mumbai: The Nifty Monday witnessed volatility after its three session gain, though managed to recover most of its losses to end marginally lower by 6.40 points to 8,603.45 at the National Stock Exchange (NSE).

Earlier the key indices opened positive, but soon wavered on caution ahead monsoon session of Parliament tomorrow, which is expected to stormy in the midst of number bills to be passed including the key GST bill.

Sentiments also affected ahead of quarterly earning results of key index heavyweights.

Intense selling led the index to loss nearly 51 points to 8,559.00 during intra-day amid selling led by Realty and banking segments including PSU Banks, finances it was followed by metal, FMCG and infra counters.

However, buying in mid-cap and small-cap shares along with pharma, energy and auto counters helped the market to cushion the losses.

The broader 50-share NSE Nifty opened higher at 8,623.90, later slid to 8,559.00 before closing at 8,603.45, showing a marginal loss 6.40 points, or 0.07 percent.

Elsewhere in Asian closed mixed, European stocks were trading higher.

Major losers were PNB, Bank of Baroda, ACC, Cairn, Tata Power, Tata Motor, SBI and Coal India.
While notable gainers are UltraCemCo, Asian Paint, BPCL, Hindalco and Grasim.

Turnover in the cash segment declined to Rs 13,822.82 crore as against Rs 14,983.44 crore last Friday.

A total of 7,577.98 lakh shares changed hands in 68,33,063 trades and the total market capitalisation of Nifty stood at Rs 1,02,35,379 crore.
