New Delhi: Economic Affairs Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi was on Tuesday designated as Finance Secretary.
The Finance Ministry has four secretaries - Economic Affairs, Expenditure, Revenue and Financial Services. The senior most among the four is designated Finance Secretary.
Government in October brought in a new team at the Finance Ministry shunting out Finance Secretary Arvind Mayaram and inducting US-based economist Arvind Subramanian as Chief Economic Advisor as it prepares the groundwork for its first full-fledged Budget next February.
Arvind Mayaram, who had twin roles as both finance and economic affairs secretary and was appointed by the previous government, has been shifted to the tourism ministry.
Secretaries in the finance ministry formulate and carry out policy, besides helping to craft the annual budget in close association with the minister and advisers.
Mehershi, earlier chief secretary of Rajasthan, had worked closely with Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje in introducing some of India's most radical labour reforms.
