Sensex fails to hold above 27,000 level, drops over 100 points

The BSE benchmark Sensex failed to retain its early gains and fell below 27,000-mark at mid-session trade Friday due to selling pressure in banking, auto and healthcare stocks.

The BSE benchmark Sensex failed to retain its early gains and fell below 27,000-mark at mid-session trade Friday due to selling pressure in banking, auto and healthcare stocks.

The 30-share barometer, which had lost 54.01 points in previous session, dropped further by 106.34 points or 0.39 percent to 26,979.59.

Similarly, the broad-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty traded down by 24.55 points or 0.30 percent at 8,071.40.

Major losers among the 30 Sensex stocks were Tata Steel, HDFC, Coal India, BHEL and ICICI Bank.

Meanwhile in Asia, Tokyo stocks ended flat today, losing early gains driven by the yen hitting a six-year low against the dollar and the European Central Bank`s surprise rate cut.

The Nikkei 225 index ended down 0.05 percent, or 7.50 points, at 15,668.68 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, while the broader Topix index of all first-section shares slipped 0.25 percent, or 3.18 points, to 1,293.21.
