The benchmark BSE Sensex fell by 229 points to about six-week low of 27,602.01 Thursday on sustained foreign fund outflows, tracking weak global cues amid plunging crude prices.
The NSE Nifty dropped by 62.75 points to 8,292.90.
The 30-share index declined by 229.01 points, or 0.82 percent, to 27,602.01 after moving in range of 27,539.47 - 27,796.34.
The gauge had gained 34.09 points in yesterday's volatile trade.
Brokers said a weak trend on other Asian bourses, tracking overnight losses on US markets after a pullback in petroleum stocks sparked a selloff, mainly dampened trading sentiment here.
