Sensex plunges by 375 points; hovering near 25,200

The benchmark BSE Sensex reversed its early gains and quoted lower by nearly 400 points in afternoon trade Friday on heavy profit-booking in realty, power and metals stocks.

The benchmark BSE Sensex reversed its early gains and quoted lower by nearly 400 points in afternoon trade Friday on heavy profit-booking in realty, power and metals stocks.

The 30-share barometer last quoted down by 312.53 points or 1.22 percent to 25,263.68 after moving in range of 25,200.09 - 25,688.31.

The index had jumped 102.32 points in the previous session.

Similarly, the National Stock Exchange index Nifty moved down by 98.15 points or 1.28 percent to 7,551.75.

Major losers on BSE were, NTPC (3.49 percent), ONGC (3.20 percent), Hindalco ( 3.17 percent) Tata Steel (2.79 percent) and Axis Bank (2.75 percent).

Brokers said, a weak trend on other Asian bourses on concerns about the growing crisis in Iraq and overnight losses in the US markets, supported the profit-booking.

Among other Asian markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell by 0.32 percent while Japan's Nikkei shed 0.87 percent in early trade today.

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.65 percent lower in yesterday's trade.
