Sensex tanks 555 points, Nifty below 8500

Fresh fears over the impact of retrospective taxation rattled foreign investors and Indian markets on Monday, according to experts.

New Delhi: The Sensex on Monday extended losses vfor the fourth straight session registering their biggest single-day drop in six weeks and ended the day at 27,886.21, down 555.89 points. The broader 50-share Nifty closed session below 8500; at 8,448.1 , down 157.9 points.

Fresh fears over the impact of retrospective taxation rattled foreign investors and Indian markets, traders said.

Foreign investors, key to Indian shares hitting record highs in March, have bought shares worth $6.38 billion in 2015 so far, in addition to $16.2 billion worth of inflows last year.

Overseas investors sold Indian shares worth a net Rs 675 crore ($107.89 million) on Friday, provisional exchange data showed.

Other global events (Grexit) and domestic issues (tax notices to FIIs for past income) also affect sentiment.

Reliance lost 5 percent and Hero Motocorp fell 4 percent. Other laggards were HDFC, Cipla and M&M. Top gainers are ICICI Bank and Sun Pharma.
