The Tokyo-based electronics giant logged a quarterly net profit of 82.4 billion yen ($664 million), while operating profit also jumped 38.8 percent to 96.9 billion yen, pointing to strong demand in its PlayStation games division.

Tokyo: Sony said Thursday its April-June net profit more than tripled to $664 million and kept its full-year forecast unchanged, as the company emerges from a painful corporate restructuring that included layoffs and asset sales.

The Tokyo-based electronics giant logged a quarterly net profit of 82.4 billion yen ($664 million), while operating profit also jumped 38.8 percent to 96.9 billion yen, pointing to strong demand in its PlayStation games division.

But overall sales were flat, edging down 0.1 percent to 1.8 trillion yen.

Revenue was weighed by the company`s struggling smartphone unit as well as weaker demand for mid-range LCD televisions and home audio, Sony said, as it shifts its focus to higher-end TVs.

The company said it was still on track for a 140 billion yen net profit and operating income of 320 billion yen on sales of 7.9 trillion yen in the fiscal year to March 2016.
