US stocks rise as Fed interest rate fears ease

At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 17,883.32, up 120.08 points (0.68 percent).

The broad-based S&P 500 rose 13.85 (0.67 percent) to 2,080.81, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index gained 30.38 (0.62 percent) to 4,917.32.

William Dudley, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Monday told a New Jersey gathering that a disappointing March jobs report suggests that first-quarter growth "is likely to be quite weak."

Dudley said the timing of Fed interest rate hikes is "uncertain" and will remain dependent on economic data.

Dow member ExxonMobil gained 1.1 percent, while oil-services companies Halliburton and Nabors Industries jumped 4.2 percent and 5.7 percent, respectively, on surging oil prices.
