New Delhi: The US-based e-retailer, Amazon, is planning India as the launch-pad of its drone delivery system for its packages starting with Mumbai and Bangalore. And it could be as soon as Diwali.
According to a leading English daily, sources aware of the development said Amazon will make India and not US as the launch-pad for its plan to deliver packages via drones or unmanned aerial vehicles. And it will start with a trial in Mumbai and Bangalore where the company has its warehouses.
As per report, the drone will carry payload upto 2.26 kg which covers 86 percent of products sold on Amazon.
Amazon has targeted India as the trial base for its drone delivery system as the country lack rules regarding the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). On the contrary, US does not permit companies to use UAVs or drones outdoor.
If the process works out, the Seattle-based Jeff Bezos company could deliver products within 90 minutes to 3 hours for selected customers and areas.
In India, Amazon is challenging Flipkart for leadership in the online retail market and if the drone delivery system works, the US company could create a huge publicity and make it the leading e-retail company in the country especially with the festival season coming up.
