CCI to step up vigil on high technology market

Competition Commission will start intense analysis of multi-sided high technology market as it looks to boost its vigil against unfair business ways.

New Delhi: Competition Commission will start intense analysis of multi-sided high technology market as it looks to boost its vigil against unfair business ways.

S L Bunker, a member at the Competition Commission of India (CCI), today said that so far the regulator's enforcement has been mainly focused on basic industries and commodities.

The Commission is now set to undertake intense analysis of multi-sided high technology market involving network industry and more complex markets which require greater understanding of economic theories and anti-trust analysis, Bunker said here.

"Recent development about net-neutrality and other high-tech issues is an area where the Commission will be stressing this thing," he was quoted as saying in a release issued by Assocham.

He was participating in the conference on 'Competition Law: Successes, challenges & reforms' organised by the industry body.

The Commission is already investigating some cases related to high technology segments.

Meanwhile, Bunker said that sometimes, trade associations while pursuing their legitimate business interest cross the line and indulge in anti-competitive activities thereby creating lot of market distortions.

So far, the Commission has received about 600 information including from individuals, references and suo motu cases have also been initiated. "Out of this around 75 percent have been already decided, some of them are under investigation and few are under consideration," he said.
