New Delhi: Internet of Things, or IoT, can be loosely described as a network of inter-connected devices that can be accessed through the Internet.
IoT can help automate solutions to problems faced by various industries like agriculture, health services, energy, security, disaster management etc. through remotely connected devices
Here are five interesting things about the IoT that you ought to know.
1. Devices or objects under IoT, can be connected seamlessly on networks and communicate with least human intervention. These can range from devices we have in our homes like smart thermostats to smart fridges and even automobiles.
2. Identifiable through embedded computing system, each thing (device) can interoperate within the internet infrastructure. IoT has the ability to transfer data over network without human or computer interaction or interface.
3. IoT can be used for automatic alerts. This alerts can be used for anything that usually requires manual attention. For example, street lights will automatically go off when they sense no traffic on the roads and consequently save power. Another application could be a smart band that will automatically alert physician when body vitals go to abnormal levels.
4. The number of internet-connected devices (12.5 billion) surpassed the number of human beings (7 billion) on the planet in 2011, and by 2020, Internet-connected devices are expected to number between 26 billion and 50 billion globally.
5. A study by global technology research firm Gartner says that the IoT will connect 1.1 billion devices in smart cities this year and a whopping 9.7 billion devices by 2020, while smart homes will lead with 294 million connected devices in 2015.
