GSM operators add 4.64 mn subscribers in June, Bharti leads

GSM operators added 4.64 million new subscribers in June taking their total user base to 677.35 million.

New Delhi: Led by country's largest telecom player Bharti Airtel, GSM operators added 4.64 million new subscribers in June taking their total user base to 677.35 million, according to data released by industry body COAI.

Bharti Airtel, which has a market share of 27.65 percent, added 2 million users in June to take its total subscriber base to 187.30 million, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) Monday said.

Country's third largest operator Vodafone India added 1.22 million customers in June, taking its subscriber base to 153.70 million. The operator has a market share of 22.69 percent as on June 30, 2012.

Aditya Birla group firm Idea Cellular, with a market share of 17.30 percent, added 1.19 million new subscribers during the month. It now has subscriber base of 117.16 million.

Uninor, one of the telecom operators whose 2G licences have been cancelled by the Supreme Court (SC), added 0.50 million new customers in June, taking its user base to 45.57 million.

Videocon, another player whose licences have also been cancelled, lost 0.66 million users during the month. The user base of Videocon stands at 5.57 million.

These companies along with other new operators such as Etisalat DB, STel and Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL) will have to participate in the upcoming auction to buy spectrum to continue operations as their licences are valid up to September 7.

The figures of Stel and Etisalat have been deleted from the database, the body said.

State-owned telecom firms BSNL and MTNL, however, did not perform well this month. While BSNL did not add a single subscriber during the month, MTNL, which operates in Delhi and Mumbai, added just 162 new customers during the month.

The subscriber base of BSNL and MTNL stood at 94.68 million and 5.32 million, respectively.

COAI data does not contain subscriber numbers from Reliance Communications.

SSTL, which reports its numbers to CDMA body AUSPI, said it has added 0.28 million customers in June taking its total customer base to 16.59 million.
