Secretaries in key ministries, retired bureaucrats and a former RBI Deputy Governor are in the race for the post of chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

New Delhi: Secretaries in key ministries, retired bureaucrats and a former RBI Deputy Governor are in the race for the post of chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Incumbent Rahul Khullar retires later this month.

Defence Secretary R K Mathur, Commerce Secretary Rajeev Kher and former RBI Deputy Governor Subir Gokarn, IT Secretary R S Sharma, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Bimal Julka, former Telecom Secretary M F Farooqui and Steel Secretary Rakesh Singh are among the short-listed candidates, sources said.

About 70 candidates had submitted their applications.

After scrutiny of applications, about 35 people have been shortlisted and the final selection will be made the next few days.

The tenure TRAI Chairman is three years or till the age of 65 years.

Khullar took early retirement from his position as Commerce Secretary before taking charge as telecom regulator on May 14, 2012.
