EDMC sets target of Rs 200 crore house tax

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation has set a target of Rs 200 crore for the House Tax earnings for the civic body this financial year and has asked the department to come hard on defaulters, officials said today.

"Given the record recovery last year, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation this year has set a target of Rs 200 crore in the House Tax segment," chairman of EDMC's Standing Committee Sanjay Surjan said today.

Referring to a list of defaulters, the chairman asked officials to take all possible measures to recover taxes.

"Taxes from private properties have been recovered well but recovery from government properties have not been up to the mark," he said in a statement.

On the matter, officials said their demands have been ignored, and the issue is now a matter of concern for the municipal body.

Stating that instructions have been given to officials to recover the taxes due, the chairman said if necessary, bank accounts of defaulters also would be attached.

During the meeting, new taxes proposed by the EDMC commissioner has not been accepted, he said.

As per the efforts to augment house taxes, every property owner will be given a unit identity number and a house tax pass book and the payment shall be done through that book only, the budget proposal said.

A special window to issue birth and death certificates in 30 minutes on presentation of genuine documents has also been proposed by the EDMC.

Among other proposals, it said, parking sites would also be developed as advertising sites to boost revenues by putting unipoles, wall wraps and others means.
