New Delhi: After Kanpur police had arrested two over alleged involvement in a betting scandal surrounding Indian Premier League, 6 news arrests have been reported from Ghaziabad.
The arrests took place around mid-night on Friday and the police have recovered cash around Rs. 70 lakh, as well as a few mobile phones, as per a report in CNN News 18.
The previous arrests were made after the police came to know of bets being placed on the match between Gujarat Lions and Delhi Daredevils.
The suspects have been identified as Nayan Shah, a native of Maharashtra, and Vikas Kumar, who belongs to Pukhrayan from adjoining Kanpur Dehat district, he said.
Ramesh Kumar, the third accused in the racket, was arrested from the Green Park stadium and works as a sub- contractor in the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL), the SSP said.
According to the police, Kumar used to stay at the stadium and send pitch reports to his two associated at the hotel.
The money-spinning IPL, which is the world's most popular domestic cricket league, has been plagued by controversies ever since its inception in 2008. Corruption and match-fixing have often come hand in hand with thrilling action on field. The conclusion of current season would also bring end to the 2-year bans of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for their alleged involvement spot fixing scandals in 2013.
The 2013 scandal saw S Sreesanth, a former India international bowler, being banned for life along with teammates Ankit Chavan and Ajit Chandila for involvement in the spot-fixing and betting scandals.
