Earthquake of 5.5 magnitude hits Uttarakhand; tremors felt in Delhi-NCR, North India

Strong tremors were felt in parts of Delhi and adjoining areas on Wednesday.

NEW DELHI: A strong earthquake that was estimated to measure 5.5 on the Richter scale struck Uttarakhand around 8:50 pm on Wednesday. Strong tremors were felt in Delhi and other areas across northern India. 

Tremors were also reported from Uttaranchal, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

As per IMD, the epicentre of the earthquake was Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag, with a Magnitude of 5.5 and depth of 30 km.

"The epicentre is in Uttarakhand, the tremors felt in Delhi and NCR are the impulses," an official at Centre for Seismology, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

EMSC located the epicentre between the hill shrine of Kedarnath and the town of Pipalkoti in Uttarakhand. 

Mild tremors were also felt in Dehradun, Patiala and Chandigarh today.

This is the second earthquake in Uttarakhand in the past 24 hours. On Tuesday, a 3.3 magnitude quake was reported in the state.
