New York: The Broadway musical 'The Last Ship', which was penned by musician Sting, is set to close on January 24.

The musician tried to boost the ticket sales of the musical by joining the cast of the musical last month but the show, which cost USD 15 million to produce and had USD 625,000 as its weekly running costs, could not sustain.

The Last Ship's producers Jeffrey Seller and Kathryn Schenker, shared the news of the closure in an email to members of the production and other supporters, reported the New York Times.

"We have been bewildered and saddened by our inability to sustain an audience for this musical that we deeply love," they said in the email adding: "There are no easy explanations."

'The Last Ship' was one of the most anticipated musicals and had a great creative team behind it including Joe Mantello as well as Tony award-winner Seller.

The musical was Sting's first to hit Broadway and he went extra mile to promote. Sting joined the cast in early December, which saw the numbers double at the box office but they still fell short.
