Washington: Justin Marks is in talks to pen the sequel of Tom Cruise starrer 1980's classic film 'Top Gun.'

According to reports, Paramount and Skydance want the writer, who's recently scripted Disney's upcoming live-action version of 'The Jungle Book,' to work on the project, which might see Cruise, 52, reprise his role of ace pilot Maverick.

The film would be produced by David Ellison of Skydance with Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original movie, while Dana Goldberg, also from Skydance, acts as exec producer.

The project, which aims to show the relevance of good old fashioned pilots in today's high-tech, drone-centric war environment, had been held back after Tony Scott, the director of the 1986 film, who was to helm the sequel, committed suicide in 2012.
