Washington: 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' has scored the second biggest domestic opening ever at box office with earning a whopping 187.7 million dollars.

Though it was estimated that the flick would top the 207.4 million dollars claimed by the first film in the series back in 2012, the reason for not reaching the mark might be weaker reviews than the original film, as well as competition from the NBA playoffs, the Kentucky Derby and the much anticipated boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, Variety magazine reported.

The film grossed an estimated 627 million dollars in 12 days of release, of which roughly 18 million dollars of opening weekend loot came from 364 Imax screens.

Now, the 3 biggest North American debuts in history are all Marvel movies, with 'Age of Ultron' has pushed over 'Iron Man 3,' which had 174.1 million dollars opening, from its runner-up position on the all-time list.
