Guwahati:  Dadasaheb Phalke award winning filmmaker Adoor Gopalkrishnan today said state governments should have a clear policy to promote good cinema.

"The state governments should have a clear policy regarding financing and by setting up more cinema houses with state of the art facilities," Gopalkrishnan told reporters here.

The experience of the viewers should be a pleasurable one," he said as the 'Guest of the Month' at the Gauhati Press Club.

Films were always looked down aesthetically and television contributed to its further lowly status by promoting commercial cinema for the viewers, he said.

"Good regional cinema cannot compete with commercial films as the former deals with reality and the latter tells you lies, which people have started believing as what cinema is all about," he said.

The audience now believes that if a film has won a national award it must be boring, but this must change with the help of media which must promote excellence, the filmmaker said.

"Media, particularly the print media, must convince that films are very serious cultural activity and instead of the general policy to promote actors and actresses, they should focus more on filmmakers and their art," he said.

Asked about the role of social media in promoting good cinema, he said, "It is very dangerous and worse than television. Every new mode of communication is misused, but it should not to be banned. Let people be aware that it is being misused."
