New Delhi: Launching a crackdown against old vehicles to tackle air pollution in the city, about 236 non-distant vehicles were returned at borders and denied entry by the police in Delhi on Tuesday.

The Delhi Police said that about 568 vehicles were challaned for not having Pollution under Control Certificate (PUC).

"As many as 5,218 old looking vehicles were checked out of which 11 vehicles were found more than 15 years old and were impounded," the Delhi police said.

More than 50 major construction works were stopped in Delhi after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) announced ban on construction activities for one week.Meanwhile, the Supreme Court earlier today defined pollution in Delhi as "dreaded", "severe" and "disaster", and asked Centre to response on its policy to tackle pollution.

The apex court also noted down the suggestions made by Sunita Narain, the Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) to come up with a Common Minimum Programme in next two days to come with a solution to tackle the situation.Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung yesterday ordered to de-registrar old diesel vehicles to counter smog levels that touched an alarming level after Diwali celebrations.
