Depression is a common mental disorder, causing persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest and also affects a person's thoughts, behaviour, feelings and sense of well being.

New Delhi: Depression is a common mental disorder, causing persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest and also affects a person's thoughts, behaviour, feelings and sense of well being.

Though there's no specific food proven to relieve depression, but a diet plays a huge role in dealing with it. One should also avoid eating junk food when you're depressed as it can actually worsen the symptoms.

Here are some foods to avoid when you are depressed:

Ice cream and chocolates

When depressed, one should avoid eating foods like ice cream and chocolates as they contain high amount of sugar that leads to an increase in the number of stress hormones.

Coffee

Consuming of sweet coffee drinks like lattes and mochas that are made with sugary syrups, and espresso can make it difficult for you to sleep and a disrupted sleep can mess with your mental state.

Processed foods

Processed foods are high in sodium, fat and artificial additives and low in nutritional value, that can increase the stress hormones in the body and make you even more depressed.

Fried foods

One should avoid eating fried foods like ried chicken or french fries when you are depressed as they contain trans fats that have been found to potentially increase depression.
