New Delhi: Performing a complex keyhole surgery, doctors in Mumbai's Bhaktivedanta Hospital removed 2,350 stones from a woman's abdomen.
The 50-year-old patient who had known about the gallstones since November 2016 didn't act upon the doctors' advise of a surgery as she searched for other alternatives.
However, the pain became intolerable, compelling the woman to seek further medical advice. An ultrasound at Bhaktivedanta hospital confirmed what was found in earlier investigations.
The team of doctors who performed the 30-minute surgery under the supervision of laparoscopic surgeon Dr BC Shah was left baffled after they counted the number of stones removed.
A keyhole surgery is a laparoscopic procedure, which involves a small incision in the area and the operation is performed with the guidance of a camera.
As per reports, the patient is fine and recovering well.
The gallbladder is a small pouch-like organ in the upper right part of the stomach which stores bile juice produced by the liver that helps break down fatty foods.
The development of stones in the gallbladder, however, can cause severe stomach pain, vomiting, jaundice and various other complications, which if delayed, can even prove fatal.
According to doctors, the most number of stones – 3110 in total – were removed by British doctors from the gallbladder of a German patient in 1983.
