22 get Sahitya Akademi Awards

Panaji, Dec 22: Leading Hindi author Manohar Shyam Joshi, who penned popular TV serials 'Buniyaad' and 'Hum Log', and late Marathi poet Arun Kolatkar were among the 22 litterateurs named for this year's Sahitya Akademi Awards and the institution honoured for the first time authors writing in Bodo and Santhali languages.

Joshi, who penned popular TV serials 'Buniyaad' and 'Hum Log',
and late Marathi poet Arun Kolatkar were among the 22
litterateurs named for this year's Sahitya Akademi Awards and
the institution honoured for the first time authors writing in
Bodo and Santhali languages.

Poets dominated the awards this year with Hamidi Kashmiri
(Kashmiri) bagging the honours for 'Yath Miani Joye', Suresh
Dalal (Gujarati) for 'Akhand Zalar Vage', Vivekanand Thakur
(Maithili) for 'Chanan Ghan Gachchiya', Swami Rambhadracharya
(Sanskrit) for the epic in verse 'Sri Bhargava Raghaviyam' and
Dholan 'Rahi' (Sindhi) for 'Andhero Roshan Thiye'.

While Joshi won the award, announced today by Akademi
President and leading Hindi writer Gopichand Narang, for his
novel 'Kyaap', Kolatkar was honoured for his collection of
poems 'Bhijki Vahi' published shortly after his death last
year.

Mangal singh hazowary and jadumani besra were named for
the coveted awards for their poetry 'jiuni mwgthang bisombi
arw aroj' (bodo) and 'bhabna' (santhali), respectively.

"It is for the first time that the awards to books in
newly recognised Bodo and Santhali language were selected",
Narang said.

"The books were selected on the basis of recommendations
made by a jury of three members in the concerned languages in
accordance with the procedure laid down for the purpose," said,
Narang, adding the awards would be presented on February 21 in
New Delhi.
