CBI starts probe into Meghalaya foodgrain scam

The CBI has started investigation into a scandal involving misappropriation of foodgrains from FCI godowns in Meghalaya.

Shillong, Sept 15: The CBI has started investigation
into a scandal involving misappropriation of foodgrains from
FCI godowns in Meghalaya.

Amid reports of alleged anomalies in distribution of
foodgrains through the FCI, the CBI has recently registered a
case and begun a probe.

When contacted, CBI Superintendent of Police H Nongpluh
said, "Investigations are in a nascent stage, and it was too
early to say anything."

CBI sources said initial investigation has revealed that
foodgrains worth nearly Rs 50 lakh were diverted from the FCI
godown at Tura in West Garo Hills.

Parliamentary Secretary (Mass and Elementary Education)
Ampareen Lyngdoh said certain school managing committees and
distributors were in nexus in diverting foodgrains meant for
school children.

The sources said they have already zeroed in on some
persons involved in the scandal.

Meanwhile, to check such pilferage, the state food and
civil supplies and consumers affairs department has focussed
on electronic PDS management and also supported the idea of
issuing bar-coded coupons for families covered under Antyodaya
Anna Yojana as was done in some other states.

Department officials said e-PDS management would reduce
the number of 'ghost' ration card holders and ensure
transparency in distribution of foodgrains.
