Check piracy, says Aamir Khan

Two key figures of the film industry on Saturday described piracy as the "greatest concern" of Bollywood but differed on measures to be adopted to check it.

New Delhi, March 15: Two key figures of the film industry on Saturday described piracy as the "greatest concern" of Bollywood but differed on measures to be adopted to check it.
While Bollywood actor-director, Aamir Khan wants more measures to check piracy, acclaimed director, Shekhar Kapur favoured a freedom from Intellectual Property Right.

Aamir, whose latest film `Tare Zameen Par` was a box office hit, said, piracy is the "greatest concern" facing the entertainment industry.

"The greatest concern facing us (entertainment industry) is piracy. It is sad that India is not doing enough to check piracy," he said.

"We have been aware of this problem for long but we have not done anything much to keep it in check. A lot of time and money is spent into making a film...," said Aamir, while speaking at a conclave, here.

CEO, Hyde Park Entertainment and Hollywood producer, Ashok Amritraj, who also spoke at the event said, "Pirates are the biggest threat to the growing industry and they should be crushed".

Kapur, who chaired the session Entertainment Next at the Conclave, however, said, "It is the time to let go off intellectual property rights. It is a new economy where we use our brand to make money".

Taking the example of US based music band, Radiohead, which had put up its debut album on the internet, he said, "They made a brand out of free music that they had put up on the net and then made money on tours and shows which were hugely successful. Future is about using our brand to make the money for us."
