Commission setup to identify OBCs functioning without chairman

While political parties and governments across the board are wooing OBCs, in Delhi the commission set up to identify backward castes is virtually non-functional.

New Delhi, Oct 01: While political parties and governments across the board are wooing OBCs, in Delhi the commission set up to identify backward castes is virtually non-functional.
Over 18 representatives from various communities who
want to be included in the other backward caste lists are
waiting to get approval from the commission which is headless
after its last Chairman Justice (Retired) Guman Mal Lodha
completed his tenure in 2001.

The commission's job is to examine requests for
inclusion of any class of citizen as a backward class in the
lists and hear complaints of over inclusion or under inclusion
of any backward class in such lists and tender such advice to
the government as it deems appropriate.

However, in the absence of the chairman, who is
authorised to give approval to the inclusion or inclusion of
backward caste approaching it, the list regarding inclusion of
backward classes is pending with the panel for the last five
years.
