Congmen in one upmanship battle ahead of local polls in UP

Notwithstanding Congress president Sonia Gandhi's call to party men to put up a united show in the coming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, leaders of party's state unit are indulging in one upmanship over allotment of tickets for ensuing urban local bodies' polls.

Lucknow, Oct 01: Notwithstanding Congress president Sonia Gandhi's call to party men to put up a united show in the coming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, leaders of party's
state unit are indulging in one upmanship over allotment of tickets for ensuing urban local bodies' polls.

Ignoring UP Congress Committee UPCC procedure for
selection of candidates, a party faction led by Union Minister
of State for Steel and Mines Akhilesh Das has allegedly
started screening prospective candidates from the state
capital.

City Congress president Achal Mehrotra, considered close
to das, has invited applications from prospective candidates,
through an advertisement in newspapers on Friday last.

The advertisement claimed that only the city Congress
committee was authorised to allot tickets for the local polls
in the state capital

On the other hand, UPCC had formed a committee headed by
former state unit president Arun Kumar Singh Munna to
screen prospective candidates.

Terming the advertisement "act of indiscipline", UPCC
local body cell chairman Fazle Masood said the matter would be
looked into.

The city unit of the Congress held a meeting here on
Thursday last and demanded that the party's campaign and
distribution of tickets for the local body polls be organised
under Das' leadership.
