New Delhi: Heavy rains hit Delhi Tuesday afternoon, cooling the capital that had been the reeling under hot and humid conditions and also catching many residents unawares.

Delhi received 41.6 mm of rainfall by 2.30 pm, which brought the day temperature down by six degrees to 25.8 degree Celsius.

"The southwest monsoon activity has improved over Delhi and neighbouring region and the region is likely to see more rainfall in the next two to three days," an official at Safdarjung met office said.

While many were worried about possible waterlogging, the rainfall brought smiles on the faces of many Delhi residents.

"Although the sky was partially clouded Tuesday morning, I did not expect heavy rainfall. I hope the rains will continue for some days so that we enjoy pleasant weather," said Sangeeta Singh, a software engineer.
