In a shocking yet impending announcement on Sunday, ace Indian spinner and Test skipper Anil Kumble decided to quit cricket after the Delhi Test. The spin spearhead for more than a decade, the veteran of 132 Tests had already announced his retirement from the ODIs after the 2007 World Cup.

  • Anil Kumble is the only Indian bowler to claim 600-Test wickets. He is the third highest Test wicket taker with 619 wickets in his kitty. He is behind Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan (756) and Shane Warne (708). He is the highest Test and ODI wicket taker for India.
  • In 2007, after being named as the Test skipper, Kumble went on to win the home series against Pakistan. This was India’s first home triumph against Pakistan in 27 years.
  • He has the second best figures in a Test innings. He is one of the only two bowlers to pick all 10 wickets in an innings. He picked up all the 10 wickets against Pakistan on the ground were he chose to retire, that is, the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in 1999. Jim Laker from England is the only other player to have a 10-wicket haul in his name.
  • He has the best bowling figure by an Indian in a ODI (6-12 against West Indies); one of only two bowlers ever to have taken all 10 wickets in a Test innings.
  • He only the second player (after Shane Warne) to score 2000 runs and take over 500 Test wickets.
  • Anil Kumble made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in the Australasia Cup of 1989 and his Test debut against England in 1990. Notwithstanding his unorthodox action, Kumble has been India`s leading leg-spinner for a long time now.
  • In December 2001, on his home turf at Bangalore, Kumble became India`s second bowler, and their first spinner, to take 300 Test wickets. In March 2006, He became the first Indian bowler to reach 500 Test wickets, when he trapped Steve Harmison lbw in the Mohali Test.
