Mangalore: Curfew to remain in force till evening

Curfew would continue to remain in force till this evening in riot-hit Mangalore and three other places nearby which were incident-free after three days of communal violence, a top police official said.

Authorities relaxed the curfew for two hours from 9 am in the morning to enable people to buy essential commodities. People, whose normal life was out of gear for the last three days, stood in long queues in front of shops.

No fresh incident was reported since last night in Mangalore, its rural limits, Ullal and Konaje, District Superintendent of Police B Dayanand said.

The Rapid Action Force staged a flag march in riot-hit areas to instill confidence in the minds of people as the police, Karnataka State Reserve Police, district armed reserve and Central Reserve Police kept a close watch on the situation which appeared tense.

The district authorities would decide this morning on extension or relaxation of curfew, Dayanand said.

Schools and colleges declared a holiday for two more days on October nine and 10 as a precautionary measure.

A meeting of peace committee involving religious heads of different communities decided to bring harmony in riot-affected areas where violence has left two persons dead and 80 injured.

Violence had erupted on Wednesday after Bajrang Dal activists stopped a vehicle carrying cattle to the slaughter house nearby. A temple was attacked in retaliation as the disturbances spread to other areas.
