NSG member Belgium 'constructive' on India's civil nuke issue

Belgium, a member of the nuclear suppliers group (NSG), will adopt a "constructive" approach with regard to India's quest for civil nuclear cooperation with the international community, its ambassador Patrick de Beyter said here.

New Delhi, Oct 31: Belgium, a member of the nuclear suppliers group (NSG), will adopt a "constructive" approach with regard to India's quest for civil nuclear cooperation with the international community, its ambassador Patrick de Beyter said here.
"We have absolutely no dispute with India's position," told reporters here last evening when asked whether his country supports New Delhi's aspirations to acquire technology
and fuel for its civil nuclear programme.

As per the Indo-US deal, clinched in March, the 45-nation NSG which includes Belgium is required to adjust its guidelines to allow the international community to have civil nuclear cooperation with India.

Noting that there are some issues to be resolved, he said, "Belgium will adopt a constructive approach" with regard to India's case.

He said, however, that so far India has not officially discussed the issue with his country.

The issue will be discussed when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh meets his Belgian counterpart Guy Verhofstadt here on Friday.

"It is a very technical issue," the ambassador said and noted that the Indo-US civil nuclear deal is yet to complete its processes in America. Besides, India has to settle the issue with IAEA also.

Beyter's comments came during his briefing on Belgian Prime Minister's six-day visit here beginning on Thursday.
