Producers preparing for a `fight to finish` with multiplexes

Bollywood producers today said that their proposed boycott of multiplexes over revenue sharing from April four was a fight for equality and justice.

Mumbai, March 28: Bollywood producers today said that their proposed boycott of multiplexes over revenue sharing from April four was a fight for equality and justice.
Addressing a press conference, Mukesh Bhatt, who heads the core group of film producers, said their demand for equal share in ticket sales was not unjustified.

"Our fight is on principles and we are asking for justice. It will continue till the end," he said.

Producers like Vashu Bhagnani and Sajid Nadiadwala are considering rescheduling releases of their films `Kal Kisne Dekha Hai` and `Kambhakth Ishq` respectively slated for release in April and May.

They said from April four, producers would not screen new movies in theatres and if multiplex owners do not accept their demands, new films will be released only in single screen theatres.

"A decision to release the films in single screen theatres will be taken by the producers association and we will abide by it," they said.

Bhatt said negotiations with multiplex owners were still on. "But the stalemate continues. I am optimistic," he said.

Producers had come together to show solidarity with Bipasha Basu-Neil Nitin Mukesh starrer, `Aa Dekhen Zara` which released yesterday only in single screens after multiplexes refused to release the film.

Bhatt said producers had been forced to boycott exhibitors and they were banning new releases with a heavy heart for the cause of equality and fair business.

"Producers cannot do without multiplexes and vice versa. In the prevailing economic environment, we have to work together so that the business of cinema continues," he said.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra said his row with multiplex owners dates back to the time his film `Lage Raho Munnabhai` was released.

"I was fighting my own battle while other producers did not support me as they were not affected that time. But, I am happy that producers have united," he said.

Actor Bipasha Basu said actors do not interfere in production sector. "But with my film not getting a fair release, I understand what the producers go through," she said.

"I feel violated today. I want people to watch the film and then judge it," she said.

Hoping that the dispute would be resolved amicably, filmmaker Sajid Khan said, "Indian cinema has gone from strength to strength even before the advent of multiplexes. Single screen theatres are the heritage of cinema".

Producer Ramesh Taurani said films would run on merit irrespective of multiplexes.
