Rehab scheme not applicable in CRZ area: Deshmukh

Mumbai, Oct 10: The slum rehabilitation scheme would
not be applicable for slums falling under the coastal
regulatory zone-1 area, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao
Deshmukh said here on Tuesday.

Deshmukh was speaking at a steering committee meeting
held at Mantralaya (secretariat) to approve development
proposals of various urban areas in the state under Jawaharlal
Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (NURM).

Proposals for various developmental projects in Mumbai,
Thane, Mira-Bhayander, Pune, Nagpur and Nanded were approved
at the meeting.

Shiv Sena MLA Datta Nalawade pointed out that several
developers were keeping slumdwellers in the dark about the
fact that the rehabilitation scheme could not be implemented
in CRZ area.

The Chief Minister said banners should be put up in these
areas, clearly stating that the scheme could not be
implemented in CRZ-1 area.

Old water supply pipeline to Mumbai would be changed at a
cost of Rs 253 crore, the meeting was informed.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has proposed
building tunnels for water supply, Additional Municipal
Commissioner Manukumar Srivastava said.

In view of Pune hosting the 2008 Commonwealth Youth
Games, more funds under NURM should be allocated to the city,
Congress MLA Chandrakant Chhajed said.
